And Now For Some Shock and Awe

Today's entry calls for another round of Lying or Stupid...
Listen:

Even though study after study shows that abstinence-only education isn't effective, and can actually increase ignorance of teens toward safe, and more important, healthy and informed attitudes toward sex, funding for this type of education in public schools has increased almost 3,000% since Bush took office (no, that's not a typo). As part of a recruitment tool, the Bush administration has directed this funding not only to schools, but to Churches and other anti-abortion groups.

Nevermind that abstinence-only educated kids are much less likely to practice safe sex and more likely to have anal sex than kids who've actually been educated regarding safe sex...that's fancy pants science hogwash!

In keeping with the Bush administration's theme of ignoring science and pushing misinformation, one documented lecture by Pam Stenzel, an abstinence instructor told a class of eighth graders that:

  • no one has ever had sex with more than one partner without paying a price

  • birth control pills make you ten times more susceptible to death

  • abortion causes long-term psychological damage

  • condoms are unsafe

  • boys don't get hurt by premarital sex while girls suffer for life (I know - a sexist, anti-female message from religiouss sex education - I'm shocked!)

  • large numbers of 18 to 20-year- old women are having radical hysterectomies because of cervical cancer caused by early sexual activity

  • Now, one study has found that kids who are observed after taking "the pledge" are probably not the best sources of info anyway. Why? Well, because they're lying...duh!

    Here's the latest:

Teenagers who take pledges to remain virgins until marriage are likely to deny having taken the pledge if they later become sexually active. Conversely, those who were sexual active before taking the pledge frequency deny their sexual history, according to new study findings.

...In addition, these teens may also underestimate their risk of exposure to sexually transmitted diseases.

"Teenagers do not report their past sexual activity accurately, with virginity pledgers giving more inaccurate reports of their past sexual activity," study author Janet Rosenbaum, of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, told Reuters Health.

    Read on.

So you know, the hope here is that Billy might have his first case chlamydia by 16, and be left with the impression that girls who like sex are "dirty" and will make Jesus mad and give them cancer because of it...at least he wasn't exposed to his teacher putting a rubber on a cucumber in health class. Whew.

So true. I think I postedon this pledge thing once and on abstinence once and a couple times on bio about the hpv vaccine. I just think that it's all ridiculous and in the end keeps the people at the lower end of the socioeconimic scale...at thelower end of the socioeconimic scale. It also helps foster the attitude that women who have multiple sexual partnetrs are bad.

It would be nice to see as much money spent on working toward bettering the baisc education of all people in this country and assuring that everyone that wishes can go to college without ending up with debt that will take them half their life to pay off.

It's so ridiculous it laughable. I can't believe anyone could swallow that crap. So does this mean we are all still gonna go blind if we masterbate?

You also will grow hair on your palms if you self gratify. You might go blind just from writing the word masterbkujoi, damn I went blind writing that, good thing for the little indexes on the "J" and "F" and those forced typing lessons in junoir high where they smacked you for looking at your hands while typing, little did I know they where teaching real sex ed by doing such, now I can type and look at porn at the same time. Yet another reason for the 2 indexes, to keep both hands on the keyboard!
    Cheers,

Exactly cooper, and I think that's the greater point here. With all this money earmarked for the type of education that seems to actually get kids in positions less safe than they'd be otherwise (no pun intended), it amazes me that we can't spend it on something more beneficial.

Again, this isn't about teaching a contraceptive method. It's full of undertones and 1950's messages about sex and gender.

Mary, if this were true, every man and woman (well, 90% of women I guess) would all have seeing eye dogs.

And Jessi, that's a great point. I think everyone should take one-handed typing classes. Yeah...thats what this site needs...more porn :-)

Jesus doesn't want Billy to have sex with anyone until he's married to a person of the opposite sex, of the same faith as himself and who has the same racial background as him. George Bush told me that Jesus said this the other night in a dream he had. Therefore it must be true.

Jeremy, I think it's completely plausible that abortion causes long-term psychological damage. The radical rights may be off the mark on many aspects of their obligatory morality speeches, but this may be one of the instances that they're--dare I say it?--right on.

Loved the Lying or Stupid audio and on the subject of sex and teens I feel we should educate them instead of medicate them and do not cause them to loath themselves by disregarding some inane pledge... Guilt! It's all about the guilt!

schools tend to overdose their kids with this crap and then the kids don't believe it any more. What started out as a good idea has no effect because no one believes. They use scare tactics that only result in kids thinking "bullshit". Like the endless campaign against lung cancer and smoking and the disgusting commercials on tv. Only 10% of people who smoke get lung cancer. Yet from watching tv you'd think that if you touched a cigarrette you were going to die of lung cancer within the hour. btw great post :)

Laurie, I would agree that abortion is an incredibly difficult choice for most women. Although some may suffer psychological damage, many suffer long term relief, financial and moral well being. I think those who regret their decisions may have long term psychological damage, and either way, that decision should ultimately be hers, not the government's.

I completely agree that having a child needs to be "her choice" but as far as long term RELIEF goes, no matter what the circumstances, I don't believe that that is possible.

I believe the decision to have sex should be a woman's choice, and if pregnancy becomes a result of it, that woman should also take responsibility for the decision she made. I also think "moral well-being" post-abortion is a stretch at the very best. What alleviates a burden now may end up causing future regret and pain. It isn't a good thing to encourage everyone to take drastic measures to avoid consequences.

I don't know how "moral Well being" and killing a fetus can be synonomous.....

PS.....Well said Laurie. It's a bit pompous how a MAN can even speak of the moral well being or "RELIEF" a women can achieve by this. We can chalk it up to another diarhea of the keyboard diatribe from the resident Rager himself.Par for the course.

and yes, the decision should be hers and not the Governments. No doubt. But to make such callous statements and make this procedure out to be synonomous with getting a tooth pulled is absurd. Ecspecially from a man.

Yes, the very small precentage of women who need abortions from rape or incest do feel better I would assume. Yet the trauma they are realing from trumps that, and the entire scenario isn't something akin to riding DUMBO at Disney World I would imagine.

It's people like you, who try to blend the use of abortion from rape victims and the majority who use it for birth control as one whole Black and white conglomerate who make me sick. Your callous attitude to the whole procedure, and the mindless talking points blasted up your ass about this topic are enough to make a rational person puke.

Yeah you're right anon - no woman has ever felt a sense of making the right decision after having an abortion. No one has ever felt they made the morally correct choice when a baby could not be raised in circumstances of poverty, rape or incest.

I'm not saying it's ever an easy choice and that it's not difficult for the woman. But to say that women aren't feeling confident in their choice after they have one is so obnoxiously cynical I don't even know where to start.

    What stupid fucking thing say.

So, I got this silly email.....seems simple but appropriate to share now.

If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids

    already,

three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally

    retarded, and she

had syphilis, would you recommend that she have an

    abortion?

If you said yes, you just killed Beethoven.

    Something to think about.

Confidence is one thing.I never said some women don't feel confident. You never mentioned that either, becasue we weren't talking about that at all. Once again you missed the point.

The stupid thing thats being said here, is some jackass man talking about how women feel after having abortions, like he'll ever know.
