Faux News Still Cold on Global Warming

Sometimes Fox News does provide some comic relief. Whether or not you’re watching in shock as John Gibson and Bill O’Reilly try to convince you that the two most significant holidays in the Christian world (Easter and the one the one that literally sustains the American economy every fourth quarter, Christmas) are endangered, or listening to the conservative network tell you civil war could be a good thing for Iraq, you’ve got to admit there is some level of humor at Fox that CNN and MSNBC are lacking.

When the cable networks are not parading disproportionately blonde, pageant-looking, teleprompter-readers on their 24 hours networks, they’re shoving clowns like Jonathan Hoenig, stock market analyst for Fox, in front of the camera to say stupid shit like this:

There’s no scientific proof that global warming even exists. To be honest, it’s a bogus consensus dreamed up by Greens because they hate industry. They hate advancement. They hate technology…Greens will lead us back to the stone ages.

Of course I enjoy the thick, obvious irony of a science-ignoring conservative calling “greens” anti-advancement. You know, those silly people who fight for new advances in global fuel technology, and are by their very definition forward-thinking and progressive. They’re always trying to bring us back to the stone-age with their fancy hydrogen-powered automobiles.

Can someone explain to me why conservatives are wrapped in the flag (while burning the Constitution) regarding the “Global War on Terror,” while at the same time in bed with the very industry that funds it?

I suppose if you could answer that question, you could also figure out why anti-choice conservatives support Bush and hated Clinton, when the Clinton years saw a complete decline in abortions, before the rise seen in the current administration. Or, you could explain to me how the “family values” corps of Republicans support legislation breaking up illegally immigrating families by sending immigrant parents back to Mexico while keeping their kids in America, favor policies that make it harder for gay people to have families, or support laws ending programs like Head Start, and welfare for single mothers. Hypocrisy is indeed my favorite Republican sin.

Anyway, Think Progress was on the ball enough to note that out of 928 peer-reviewed scientific papers on global warming published in the past decade, not one…not ONE, challenged the scientific consensus that Earth’s temperature is rising due to human activity. Maybe pro-technology Jonathan Hoenig should be a little more pro-reading.

They don't call the assorted local outlets for Faux News and the cast of idiots such as Limbaugh and O'Reilly "puke funnels" for no reason.
I'm waiting for someone (Soros?) to figure out a way to leverage the capital and muscle to put progressive talk radio into areas that really need it.
I LOVE my XM, but lots of folks can't afford it. And we need to reach them. . .

I watch it to confirm the chant repeated from watching the 700 Club. Plus "know thy enemy" is a good adage.

it's funny how you guys think this was a news segment with someone reporting this. It's like someone from a right wing blog using a quote from someone on Crossfire, then rendering all of CNN liberal because of one preson on the panels views. What Jeremy didn't bother to state in this piece, is that other people in this discussion style show, made comments that support that Global warming exists , the counter point was spoken for. What is also forgot to be mentioned is Jonathan Koenig is far from a Conservative nut, yes his statement may look ridiculous to many, but his stance on most issues concerning War, National security and war on Terror runs concurrent with the norm here on this site for the most part.

And by the way, do some research on Hydrogen powered cars. They would end up producing more pollution in the long run. You have to use gas or coal to compress the hydrogen. It's not the most earth friendly method in the long run. Yes it may ween us off of gas engines, but something needs to be used to compress the hydrogen into fuel cells. Double edged sword issue.

Yes, we are addicted to oil. Last time I checked Jeremy, democrats drive cars too. Democrats own oil stocks. Al gore himself burns enough gas in his private jet trying to tell people to stop global warming, to power an entire village for a year. Makes no sense to me.

We need to make a change from our energy sources. But the turnover isn't something that can happen overnight. The rich have ties to oil, because it's the number one commodity. Thats why. WE are a capitalist society. IF the greens don' want us to drill oil in our own country, we are forced to get it elsewhere. I agree we should look else where for another form of fuel. Like Ethanol for instance. I also think until then, we should use our own resources. So stop standing in the way and we can stop letting terrorists control our lifeline. It sucks, but that what it is.

Hmm, puke funnels JG…I’ve never really heard that one before, I like that. I have debated whether or not to get XM or Sirius in my car – paying for radio is something I haven’t quite been able to get my hands around. I don’t listen to much music on the radio, I’ve got the old ipod for that – however I listen to tons of talk and news these days (I know I’m getting old) and would love satellite radio. However, if you’re looking for progressive radio to show up all over the country, I’m sure you’re aware that it already has with Air America. Here is their terrestrial stations.

Cooper you shouldn’t be here, you should be out drinking.

Human, I flip on the 700 club when I think about it, and my only regret is that I don’t have anyone to share a laugh with…I tend to watch it alone for fear someone will catch me.

POP and Glenda…I generally don’t watch Fox news, not necessarily because it angers me, and believe me, it makes me want to put my fist through the tv…its more about not wanting to be misinformed. I’ve noticed since writing in this blog I have a real craving for truth and accuracy, even if it’s not something I will want to hear. When I watch Fox, I keep thinking of the documentary OutFoxed, which really sheds light on how that network operates, how they get their conservative agenda out there…its actually a lot worse than I thought.

I look at polls of Fox viewers and see how incredibly misinformed they are, and how Fox’s bullshit actually hurts their understanding of global and geopolitical issues. Take their recent coverage of the Global Warming debate – they interviewed mostly skeptics, but the skeptics themselves were mostly of the energy industry. It’s just really irresponsible and I don’t want to waste my beautiful mind on that shit.

Anon, you've wildly misunderstood and presumed a lot here.

1. No one thinks or is under the impression this was a reporter or a news segment.

2. No one thinks there is a direct cause and effect between what Hoenig said and Fox being Right Wing. Fox is way to the right WITHOUT Hoenig. It's the entire network, their behind the scenes push for conservative news, and their wildly sensationalist reporting that makes Fox news a joke...this particular incident was humorous, and in no way would I say this is the smoking gun that makes Fox conservative. That gun smoked a long, long time ago.

3. In this piece I'm not stating hydrogen is the answer (although it has a lot more value than what you stated above), or that Democrats don't drive conventional gasoline powered cars. What I am saying is that environmentalists are very progressive in pushing the industry and the free market to look at alternative sources of fuel. However -without the combination of pressure from environmentalists and high gas prices, there would be not market for development, and those who have been pushing industry deserve a lot of credit and applause for that.

4. Ask yourself this question - do you REALLY think part of the Republican or conservative agenda includes the environment as high priority? Answer yes without laughing or setting off every lie dector within 100 miles of you, and I guess you can keep your opinion.

5. While I support research for alternative fuel, I would never say that Democrats aren’t polluting as well. There isn’t a viable non-polluting source available inexpensively to everyone now, is there? Well, then you’re going to have everyone, despite political party using conventional polluting sources of energy for now, including Al Gore on his private jet. I just worked on my family’s 450 horsepower (although a much more environmentally friend 4-stroke) boat this past weekend. I’m just as guilty as anyone. Just because I have a post that mocks what some asshole on Fox says about Global Warming, doesn’t mean I’m not contributing to it when I open up at 35 knots down the bay.

However for you to suggest Al Gore hasn’t had the environment on his radar screen, and hasn’t done amazing things for the movement – including get the issue out there, while Bush mocked him for it in the 2000 election (it’s one of Bush’s many flipflops- he mocked alternative fuel previous to him being for it), you’d be quite mistaken. I think Gore has done more than any other Democratic or Republican member of the Senate or House for the environment – perhaps ever. You’d have to get into the Green party before you’d find other environmental heroes like him.

Look at all the energy-related people in the Bush administration now, their environmental policies, and who they’ve hired from said industry to lead studies on pollution! It’s a joke! Our secretary of State has an oil tanker named after her for Christs sake. Our Vice President and President have had secret energy meetings, and almost appointed Ken Lay, Bush’s good friend, to head the department of energy! We have the only president in the first world of developed nations still saying the jury is out on global warming (you know, because Jesus hates protecting the Earth)?

Anon, you have the most oil-industry related administration in the history of the United States, and you’re pointing your finger at Al Gore’s private jet? Are you serious?

You’ve got to recognize some of these politicians for what they stand for anonymous without always playing some sort of “they do it just as much” card, because there are huge differences. That’s like paring the coming indictment of Democrat Bill Jefferson (with the cash in his freezer) to the wall…the massive jaw-dropping wall of Republicans being indicted or investigated and saying, “well there is equal corruption in both parties.” There is not and you never seem to recognize that there are huge differences between the parties.

Actually Gore is claiming he's "carbon neutral" meaning he buys credits for clean energy equaling what he uses. This is an approach that others have done most notably Whole Foods, who offset their energy uses the same way. As far as either party having the moral high ground as far as corruption, give me a break DaRos, both parties are controlled by special interest and will continue to be so until there is real campaign reform. But then again we know who writes those laws so the likelyhood of that ever happening is slim.....oops none.

Oh, I’m totally for campaign finance…in fact I think that’s one of the most important issues the Senate and House could be debating…but, instead this summer session, you will see gay marriage and flag burning becoming priorities. Now, given who controls both houses, this should hardly be a surprise, because as ’06 comes up, no one is better at throwing the political wedge issues around than the Republicans.

Now, as for the corruption, I totally disagree with you. Not with this president, and this congress. And, this isn’t just anecdotal, this is measurable. If you added up all of the corruption in terms of indictments and investigations – years in prison, court dates, however you want to slice it, I’d say there is roughly and 8 to 1 ratio right now.

Does that mean corruption necessarily a Republican trait? Of course not, it’s a political trait, and it all depends on who is in power. With the Republicans running unchecked, in control of literally every facet of government, you must stand in awe…jaw-on-the-floor in awe at how corrupt their party is now.

What makes the Republican corruption more significant to me than Democratic corruption, is that Republicans claim to be the party of God…the party of family, and the party of maturity. Right now, it’s just the opposite.

seriously, how ridiculous. You are blinder then Stevie Wonder in the trunk of Ted Kennedys Car on the topic of Corrupt politicians. You couldn't be more bias if you tried. But you knew that..... This isn't saying that the current Admin. isn't corrupt,by any means.

Now, I was pointing my finger at A lGore for the shear hyopcrisy of the matter, even you can see the humor in that right ? Right ? Maybe not... Me pointing that out doesn't mean I don't see how many ties the current Administration has to the Oil industry. I'm not blind.

They do "do it just as much" , it's been proven so many times. YOu would see that if you spent less time parroting daily kos and Air America, and more time getting a well rounded grip on the world.

Show me. Show me proof. You think there is equal amounts of corruption, fire up it and show all of us.

I'll call your bluff, lets see your proof.

Show me the number of Democrats indicted in the past 6 years since the elections, and we'll compare to a list of Republicans who have been caught doing illegal shit.

I'm dead serious. I'll keep this post open. Show me the proof and I'll concede your point. I’ll be waiting.

Great story, Jeremy. Lately I have a hard time seeing the humor, so I appreciate the laugh this gave me. Leading us back to the stone ages in their hydrogen fueled cars, now that's rich. How about leading us back to the stone ages in their organic gardens? Okay, it doesn't pack the same punch. How about, leading us back to the stone ages with their gluten-free diets? Hah, you nailed it! I'll stop while I'm a head.

What? Too much schtick? You try doing Brittany Spears on a keyboard! Wait... no. that doesn't sound right at all... Drat... :>)

You don't have to be indicted to be corrupt. But with that said, jsut off the top of my head heres some that have been caught doing something wrong and corrupt some don't fit into your time frame...Sandy Berger,Will Jefferson, Harry Reid, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton,Maxine Waters, AL sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Patrick Kennedy, Ted Kennedy , John Kerry..Jsut to name a few.

Anon - I can't wait to post what I've been drafting up the past few days. You have named some here, and no doubt, democrats do get indicted and some are corrupt. However the wall of corruption in the current GOP platform is something we haven't seen..perhaps ever.

Await my post, probably this weekend at some point.

Just for clarification - could you let me know about John Kerry's corruption...that's not a challenge at all, I just can't think of what he was investigated or indicted for. I'm curious.

ThePoetryMan - I hate that dumb fuckstick. I wish someone would kick her in one of her breast implants during her next lip-syncing, 8-year-old audience funded "concerts."

sappho thanks for the Sirius pimping, I'll definitely check it out. A buddy of mine has it at home and really loves it. I think I may get it installed with my next car...which, looking at my savings balance today, should be sometime in 2049.

karena darling, you're writing posts faster at your site than I can read them. I'll try to catch more this weekend, as we're supposed to get 131 inches of rain in Portland. GREAT fishing weather.
