RATR Terror Alert. REMAIN CALM.
And now it's time for everyone's favorite game, lying or stuipd!Listen:
Ladies and Gentlemen – the terrorist issue is a lot worse than we thought. According to President Bush today:
"Our intelligence activities strictly target al-Qaeda and their known affiliates. We are not mining or trolling through the personal lives of innocent Americans."
Now it has been revealed that phone companies have provided the NSA with 10’s of millions of phone records in the past few years, and this of course means, by the president’s own words, these 10’s of millions of people are al-Qaeda affiliates.
Perhaps as much as one in every three Americans.
It could be your father. Your neighbor. That weird guy you peered over his newspaper at you on the subway. Perhaps your pre-school aged children. It could be...me.
Strangely, the terror alert level that scrolls across the bottom of my Fox News screen every 11 seconds has no changed. Hmmm…they must be in on it too.
Bush went on to make the following statement:
“The government does not listen to domestic phone calls without court approval.”
I was not aware of this. Apparently the debate we’ve been having in this country about whether or not the president can break the law to allows domestic surveillance without court approval is completely fabricated.Of course the president isn’t breaking the law, because again, “the government does not listen to domestic phone calls without court approval.” Therefore, Bush has been defending warrantless wiretapping for no reason at all, by saying things like, “the FISA law was written in 1978. We're having this discussion in 2006. It's a different world.”
And, on top of all this? We may NEVER find out whether or not Domestic spying without a warrant is illegal.
Why you ask? Because the NSA isn’t going to let the justice department have the clearance they need to investigate them.
I’ll rephrase.
The subject of the investigation isn’t letting the investigators investigate:
The government has abruptly ended an inquiry into the warrantless eavesdropping program because the National Security Agency refused to grant Justice Department
lawyers security clearance.
The Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility, or OPR, sent a fax Wednesday to Democratic Rep. Maurice Hinchey of New York saying it was closing its inquiry because without clearance it could not examine department lawyers' role in the program. The administration has vehemently defended the eavesdropping, saying the NSA's activities were narrowly targeted to intercept international calls and e-mails of Americans and others inside the U.S. with suspected ties to the al- Qaeda terror network.
Jack Cafferty on explains on CNN
Listen:
That would have been like OJ telling the LAPD that he was denying their request to investigate the murder of his wife.
The small government, get-the-feds-out-of-my-life Republicans have yet to comment...well, except for one.
This is Jonathan Turley, a well recognized expert on the subject of Constitutional Law, who is a regular guest on Fox News.

Oh I did not notice the sound link at the bottom when I was here before!
Elizabeth..there should be three sound links total. Can everyone see them? It's a small flash script so I just want to be sure its working.
Hah! Jeremy. You must read my latest musing about the phone data mining. It is in the story about 29% of the public still supporting that goofball, Bush.
Back to your post, I wonder what I should do now that I have learned from you that one out of three Amurkins is al-Kaders? Should I walk my neighborhood, sray paint an X in front of every third house and call the feds? No that won't work, because I would have to know how many people lived in each household in order to paint the X in front of each home that housed a suspect. I know, I will call the feds, get a list of every name of every person in every house in my neighborhood and report one out of each three as a possible al-Kader. That will keep us safer!
Last night on the way to the bar, my buddy and I looked at each other, and almost at the same time said, "it could be you."
it's irrelevent to bushco whether or not there is a law to obtain personal info. he fully takes the right to break any law he sees fit- at least 750 times and counting. he and his junta do whatever they feel like doing whenever they feel like doing it- and no one stops them. why- because the rest of us abide by the law- and they know this. we are on the slippery slope to dictatorship and no one will help the common people avert the slide. been nice chatting- i am sure the nsa appreciates these comments.
you are correct in saying that china is going to get the most improved country award. But having them team up with russia in this energy "cold war" and then lead the front running for the cuban oil bids ... not liking that ... now realistically russia, china, ... and cuba are chummy ... i dont like whats coming out of that kitchen ...
now about how bush came out and said hey i listen to your phone calls and there is nothing you can do about it .. well i mean ... we cant stop it ... its messed up and wrong as hell but i mean ... its on a long list of things for him ...
what i am thinking that they are doing (they being the republicans) ... they know that a dem is going to get office next election ... they are going to make stupid moves, piss off everyone, and then when a dem comes in they are going to have to spend their term fixing what bush screwed up ... that way the playing field is level again for the election after that ...
american soldier you are very optimisitic. I wish I had as much faith in the democratic party. Lately I don't.
Everyone does need to remember that a culture of fear helps them keep us where they want us. It is unecessary.
We do need to be aware though that at any moment we could die. Walking out of our home, in our cars, we could get fatal illness even, so it's best just to enjoy life and not let them scare us into believing they can protect us from threats that are minimal compared to not having health insurance when we get in to that accident, not being able to afford a college education that would get us that job which would allow us to buy that health insurance ...on and on.
As the man said, "We are in some serious trouble boys and girls."
Great post as always Jeremy.
Al Franken calls 9/11 Bush's little black dress. When things get bad he just slips it on. So, when everyone's focusing on everything he has done wrong he pulls out his little black dress and scares everyone. Then they have to believe in him because he's the only one who can save the country from al-Qaeda.
yea, right. I think it's disgusting how the republicans can break all the laws and it just goes unnoticed. Impeachment proceedings were brought against Bill Clinton because he lied. There are so many cases where Bush has lied and is on record lying. Yet, there is no huge call for impeachment. It makes me so sick.
If they are 'collecting data' via phone records (presumably only on land lines) who's to say that the NSA isn't 'collecting data' (spying sans warrant) on the internet and cellphone habits of Americans as well?
What does it take to come up with an offense that is deemed impeachable? Clinton got a little sucky-sucky under his desk and that was enough to go forth but Bush spies (or condones spying) on an entire country he was appointed to as president and nobody dare mentions impeachment or any form of punishment.
There aren't enough people in this country who give a damn about their civil rights to rise up and demand accountability. Apathy SUCKS!
