Hammered Again

A separate grand jury has convened, been given separate evidence, and has in fact indicted Tom Hot Tub Delay on even more charges – his second indictment within the past week. First, he was indicted for one count of criminal conspiracy, and now he’s been indicted on two counts related to money laundering.

Delay is the highest-ranking member of Congress ever to face criminal indictment, and he’s getting pissed. As a result you’re going to hear the typical bullshit taking points that Republicans dole out when indicted or accused of being the criminal scumbags they are.

However, I think everyone should pay attention to a consistent pattern here.

As Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina was the epitome and classic model of his presidency (years of warnings --> do nothing --> tragedy strikes --> “Who me? No one could see this coming"), Delay’s response and behavior regarding these indictments will provide a perfect microcosm for how Republicans respond to allegations: Instead of arguing the merits of the actual topic at hand, they will smear those who accuse them.

Note how little the Right Wing Media and Delay supporters will argue that he committed no crime, get into the details of what the indictments are or argue the case for or against his behavior – but rather that Delay’s indictments are actually a conspiracy – one part liberal media, one part Nancy Pelosi, and one part Ronnie Earl.

For those who are unaware, Ronnie Earl is the prosecutor assigned to convince grand juries of Tom’s illicit behavior. You will hear day in and day out how Earl is a Democrat, and that his investigation of Delay is all a result of partisan politics – like the Republicans have never gone on their own witch hunt before.

The fact is, out of the 15 politicians his office has indicted since he was first elected in 1976, only three have been Republicans. Tommy will be his fourth. For those not quick with the math, this means that when Earl indicts politicians, almost 75% of the time it’s a Democrat.

A great article was given to me by a friend recently regarding Ronnie Earl which can be read here.

Meanwhile, you can read a long list of the family values chairman’s criminal and unethical behavior here.

Finally, you can see the Daily Show's take, here.
